Is creatine banned in the UFC, boxing or under WADA?.
No. Creatine has never been on the WADA Prohibited List and every combat-sport federation permits it. Where the myth comes from, what the UFC actually says, and the one real risk.
No. Creatine is not banned by WADA, the UFC, UK Anti-Doping, USADA, England Boxing, the IBJJF or any major combat-sport body. It has never been on the WADA Prohibited List and it is not on the Monitoring Program. You can take it in camp, in fight week and on fight day without any anti-doping concern. The only reason fighters ever pause it is water weight during a cut, which is a separate question.
- Creatine is legal in every federation that follows WADA rules, which is all of them.
- It is a naturally occurring compound made in your liver and found in red meat and fish.
- It is the most studied performance supplement in existence, with an authorised UK health claim at 3g a day.
- The only real drug-test risk from a creatine product is contamination from a dirty factory. Be picky about who makes it.
Why do people think creatine is banned?
Mostly because it works and it has a scientific-sounding name. Creatine gets lumped in with steroids by people who have never read the Prohibited List. It is nothing of the kind. Your body makes about a gram of creatine a day from amino acids, and a steak contains a couple more. Supplementing simply fills the muscle stores to the top, which is why it helps with repeated short, hard efforts like takedowns, clinches and late-round scrambles.
appearances on the WADA Prohibited List, ever. Creatine has been openly used by tested athletes in every Olympic sport for thirty years.
What does the UFC say about creatine?
UFC athletes are tested under the Combat Sports Anti-Doping programme, which follows the WADA list. Creatine is not on it. The UFC Performance Institute openly recommends creatine monohydrate to its fighters as one of the few supplements with strong enough evidence to bother with. The same goes for UKAD, which lists creatine among the supplements with a legitimate use in sport.
| Body | Testing programme | Creatine |
|---|---|---|
| UFC | Combat Sports Anti-Doping (WADA list) | Permitted |
| Professional boxing (UK) | UK Anti-Doping / VADA | Permitted |
| England Boxing (amateur) | UK Anti-Doping | Permitted |
| IBJJF | USADA at major events | Permitted |
| IMMAF (amateur MMA) | WADA code | Permitted |
| Olympic boxing, judo, wrestling, taekwondo | WADA code | Permitted |
Can creatine make you fail a drug test anyway?
Creatine itself cannot. A creatine product can, if it was made on a line that also handles banned substances and picked up contamination. This is the risk with every supplement, not creatine specifically, and it is why tested athletes should be picky about who makes their supplements and what else runs on the same line. Flow State carries 5g of creatine monohydrate per scoop, with no stimulants and nothing from the WADA Prohibited List in the formula.
Should fighters take creatine at all?
Yes, for the same reason every other power athlete does. Combat sport is repeated short efforts: a takedown attempt, a flurry, a scramble off the fence, a burst on the pads. Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise, which is the authorised claim, and it is the one thing creatine does best. The trade-off is one to two kilos of water held inside the muscle, which is why some fighters drop it in fight week. There is a separate guide on creatine and weight cutting.
Every day, training or not. Timing does not matter. Total daily intake does.
A loading phase saturates the muscle a week faster. It is optional and it makes the water gain more noticeable.
Every other form of creatine costs more and has less research. Micronised monohydrate mixes better; that is the only upgrade worth paying for.
Creatine will not make you a better fighter. It will make you slightly more powerful in the last minute of a round than you would have been without it, and it will help you recover between sessions. That is worth having. It is not magic.
Creatine is not on the list. It never has been.
Is creatine banned in the military or police?
No. Creatine is not a controlled substance anywhere. Some employers ask you to declare supplements. None of them prohibit creatine.
Is creatine a steroid?
No. Steroids are hormones. Creatine is an energy compound made from three amino acids. They have nothing in common chemically or legally.
Will creatine show up on a test?
Anti-doping tests do not look for creatine because it is not banned. There is nothing to show up.
