Creatine and weight cutting: should fighters stop it before a weigh-in?.

Creatine and weight cutting: should fighters stop it before a weigh-in?

Creatine holds water inside your muscles, usually one to two kilos of it once you are fully loaded. That water is part of why it works. It is also why fighters who cut weight need a plan for it. The short version: keep creatine through camp, stop it about seven days before the weigh-in if you are close to the limit, and restart it straight after. You lose nothing that matters and you make the scale easier.

Quick answer
  • Creatine adds roughly 1 to 2kg of intramuscular water when fully loaded. It is not fat and it is not bloat under the skin.
  • Muscle creatine stores drop slowly. A week off costs you very little of the performance effect.
  • If you are within 2kg of your limit, stop creatine 7 days out. If you have plenty of room, do not bother.
  • Restart the day of the weigh-in. Stores refill in days, not weeks.

Where does the creatine water go?

Creatine pulls water into the muscle cell, not under the skin. That is different from the puffiness you get from a salty meal, and it is why creatine users look fuller rather than softer. For a lifter that is free muscle volume. For a fighter who has to stand on a scale, it is a kilo or two that has to be accounted for. It is the only real cost of creatine, and it is a manageable one.

1-2kg

of water inside the muscle at full saturation. That is the number to plan around. Lighter fighters at the low end, heavier fighters at the high end.

How fast do you lose creatine when you stop?

Slowly. Muscle creatine stores fall by a few percent a day once you stop taking it and take around four to six weeks to return to baseline. Stopping seven days before a weigh-in drops enough water to notice on the scale, while leaving most of the muscle store, and therefore most of the performance effect, in place for the fight.

The camp plan
When Creatine Why
Camp, weeks 8 to 2 5g daily, every day Full stores for sparring, conditioning and recovery between sessions.
7 days out (if cutting) Stop Water drops over the week. Muscle stores stay mostly full.
7 days out (not cutting) Keep going No reason to give up anything if the scale is not a problem.
Weigh-in day, after 5g with your rehydration Creatine helps pull the water you are drinking back into the muscle.
Fight day 5g Stores are still high. You are fighting fully loaded.

Should every fighter stop creatine before a weigh-in?

No. If you walk around within a couple of kilos of your fight weight, creatine water is a real slice of your cut and pausing it makes sense. If you have a comfortable margin, or you fight at your walk-around weight, there is no reason to give up the performance for a scale you were always going to make. The plan is for people who are close.

Does stopping creatine hurt your performance on fight night?

Not measurably, if you handle it the way above. A week off leaves the majority of your muscle creatine in place, and restarting at the weigh-in with a proper rehydration gives you around 24 to 36 hours of top-ups before you fight. What hurts fight-night performance far more is a badly managed water cut, so spend your worry there.

Restarting after the weigh-in
01
Rehydrate first

Electrolytes and water, in sips, over several hours. A scoop of Flow State in 500ml gives you 500mg sodium, 250mg potassium, 100mg magnesium and your 5g of creatine in one go.

02
Then carbohydrate

Carbs help the muscle take creatine and water back up. Rice, potatoes, bread, whatever you tolerate.

03
Fight morning

Another scoop 20 to 30 minutes before the warm-up. No stimulants in it, so no heart-rate cost before the first bell.

What not to do

Do not loading-phase creatine in the last two weeks of camp. Twenty grams a day for a week is where the dramatic water gain stories come from, and it is completely unnecessary. Five grams a day gets you to the same place in a month without the swing.

Keep it through camp. Drop it for a week. Restart at the scale.

Does creatine make you retain water under the skin?

No. The water goes inside the muscle cell. If you feel puffy, look at sodium and carbohydrate intake, not creatine.

Can I take creatine during the water cut itself?

You can, but there is no point. You are trying to shed water for a day or two and creatine is trying to hold it. Pause it and restart after the scale.

Is creatine HCl better for fighters because it holds less water?

The claim that creatine HCl holds less water has not been shown in research. It is more expensive and less studied. Stick with monohydrate and manage the timing.
