Yes, a caffeine-free pre-workout works, provided it contains the ingredients that do the actual work at the doses the research used. Most of what a pre-workout does for your performance comes from creatine, beta-alanine, citrulline and electrolytes, none of which are stimulants. Caffeine mainly changes how the session feels, not what your muscles can do. Take it out and the numbers barely move. The jitters, the crash and the ruined sleep go with it.

Why does caffeine feel like it does more than it does?
Caffeine blocks the receptors that make you feel tired, so a hard session feels less hard. That is a real effect and it is why people love it. But feeling better and performing better are different things. In the research, caffeine's effect on strength and power is small. Its effect on how you rate the effort is large. Creatine and beta-alanine do the opposite: you do not feel them at all, and they measurably change what you can do.

- Weight cuts. Stimulants make a cut harder and less controllable.

- Anyone who already drinks coffee. A stim-free pre-workout lets you keep the coffee and control the dose.
